Tension as PDP threatens governors over Agbaje as national chairman

– A group called South West Consultative Group (SWCG) has warned south-south governors to desist from attempts to impose Jimi Agbaje on the southwest as PDP national chairman
– SWCG, which is chaired by Soji Fadairo, said Jimi Agbaje was ‘a neophyte’ that was political unstable and as such unworthy of such a position as national chairman of the opposition
– The group warned the governors to mind their business or incur the wrath of the southwest PDP over the matter.

The division in the southern Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) grew wider on Monday, August 8 after a group of PDP members in the southwest threatened war with south-south governors over alleged attempts to impose Jimi Agbaje as national chairman.
The group, under the aegis of South West Consultative Group (SWCG), rejected the choice of Jimi Agbaje as the national chairman of the opposition party, calling him ‘a neophyte’.

Vanguard reports that the group, which spoke after the meeting of the southwest PDP ended in a deadlock on Monday, said it was impossible and ‘outrightly rude’ for south-south governors to attempt to impose Agbaje on the region.

The group said in a statement by its chairman, Soji Fadairo, that the Yorubas are enlightened and sophisticated enough to make a proper choice for the position and would not allow any interference.“It is downright insulting and outrightly rude for the South-South Governors to start dabbling into our affairs. Surely, Agbaje is by no measure a credible candidate. This neophyte who keeps jumping from party to party is hardly the face of the disciplined leadership of our people,” the group said. The SWCG warned the governors to mind their own business and leave the southwest PDP alone because failure to heed the warning“will provoke the ire and anger of our people.”The development comes just as former minister of education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran officially joined the national chairmanship race on Monday, August 8 when he picked his nomination form at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
Prof Adeniran assured members that his decision is as a result of his desire to re-brand the opposition party and return it to greatness.

“I want to assure all our party members and Nigerians at large that my venture into the chairmanship position of our great party has no other motive than to reposition, rebrand and put the party on the path of greatness. As a founding member, who has remained with the party in thick and thin and served in various frontline capacities, I possess the fortitude and experience to help the party achieve its objectives,” Adeniran said.
The  PDP has said that it is ready to receive back its former top member and ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo as it tries to resolves its internal crisis. This was disclosed by Senator Walid Jibrin, the chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) on Monday, August 8.
