The foremost traditional ruler in Yorubaland said he was not perturbed by Akiolu’s action. He said he is committed to ensuring unity among traditional rulers in the land.
Oba Ogunwusi spoke through the Director Media and Public Affairs of Ooni’s Palace on Wednesday.
There was an immediate buzz as the Ooni walked into the venue, with one of his aides rushing to wipe his chair clean, but the Oba of Lagos sat uninterested and looked away.
The Ooni shook hands with another monarch and he made to exchange pleasantries with the Oba Akiolu, who only raised his hand indifferently.
The clip has gone viral, with Nigerians not happy with the Lagos monarch’s reaction, with some describing it as “a public disgrace” and “pure disrespect”.
The monarch said, “nobody should castigate anybody” for doing what he did because of the position he holds and because of his age… Ooni would not stop according his colleagues and every category of people the respect they deserve.
“The Ooni of Ife is not ready to make any official statement over what happened between him and Oba of Lagos. He still holds Oba Akiolu in high esteem and what happened yesterday will not stop the Ooni from holding him in high esteem.”
