The tall yellow structures were planned to be installed just before the Changing of the Guards ceremony but were brought forward following Wednesday’s attack.
They are designed to prevent vehicle-ramming attacks like those also carried out in Nice and Berlin.
‘While there is no intelligence to indicate a specific threat to Windsor, recent events in Westminster clearly highlight the need for extra security measures to be introduced,’ said chief constable, Dave Hard castle. Barriers have also been set up outside the Houses of Parliament, the Mall, Green Park and Constitution Hill, near Buckingham Palace.
Hard castle said the threat level remains severe and extra security measures are ‘necessary’ to protect the public.
‘Preventative measures such as these have been put in place across the UK over the past 10 years at various events,’ he added.
Large black concrete blocks have also been placed in the entrance ways to the castle.
The barriers will support existing road closures and will be used to secure the Guard Change route when it is taking place. The Changing of the Guard is a formal ceremony in which the sentries guarding the castle are relieved of their duties and replaced by new guards.
Windsor and Maidenhead Local Police Area Commander Chief Inspector Sarah Grahame said: ‘I hope that people in Windsor will understand the reasons that these barriers are being introduced, and will see why they are necessary.
‘Acts of terrorism and hate crimes are committed by a small minority of people, but have a big impact on communities, and it is essential that we all continue to work together and share information in order to combat this threat.’
