Rio2016: The olympics are not just about sports

Love is in the air in one of the most unlikely of places, the competition floors of the Olympics in Rio, Brazil. On Sunday the 14th of August, Chinese Diver He Zi received a marriage proposal from her boyfriend and fellow olympian, Qin Kai, as well as a silver medal for the Women’s 3-m springboard competition. According to Reuters, Qin got down on one knee and offered up an engagement ring which He Zi accepted tearfully.

While speaking with reporters, he added that she did not expect him to propose that day or to be married off so early. The silver medalist is 25 years old and her new fiancé (and bronze medalist in the Rio 2016 3-m synchronised springboard competition) is 30 years old.

“I’ve forgotten most of what he’s said (during the proposal), but it’s largely what you can expect like promises, but what touched me the most is that he said he was willing to be bullied by me for life,”she said amidst smiles.
The engagement is the second of the Games so far at this year’s Olympics in Rio. Earlier, a Brazilian rugby player got engaged at the first Olympic rugby sevens final between New Zealand and Australia. Other olympians who have either found love or cemented their love at Rio this year include:

Laura Trott and Jason Kenny:

They are basically the British golden couple of cycling and may be leaving the games in Rio with more than 4 medals between them. Currently, they are planning a wedding for sometime next year.

Becky James and George North:

He plays rugby, arguably the most dangerous sport, for Wales and she is an olympic cyclist. From a cancer scare in 2014, which threatened her life to a knee-shattering injury which nearly ended her career dreams, Becky has come out on top, winning the silver medal in Rio. The Welsh rugby star took to Twitter to shower praise on his resilient girlfriend after her win.

Hopefully, before the end of the games this year, we will see more reminders that the olympics is not just about one controversy after the other.
