In a recent interview, Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that it was a steward, rather than a scout, who told him about Ryan Giggs.
The Welshman had been previously been playing for the youth teams at Manchester City’s school of excellence, however, on his 14th birthday (1987), he was snapped up and signed by Manchester United.“We always had a few scouts who claimed they were the one who discovered Giggs,” Sir Alex said (via ESPN)
“They probably did, but they never acted on what they saw.”
“It was actually a steward who first told me it was a disgrace that this Manchester United fan was training down the road at City.”
“You knew right away, the way he ran across the ground, that he was something else. He was like a Cocker Spaniel chasing a piece of silver in the wind. His feet never seemed to touch the ground and that was the start of it all.”
Ryan Giggs’ first start for Manchester United was actually against Manchester City in 1991 and the player scored the only goal of the game as the Red Devils went on to win 1-0. He then went on to spend 29 years at Old Trafford as a player, a coach and finally an assistant manager. However, after the appointment of Jose Mourinho, Ryan Giggs decided to depart the club in order to pursue a career as a manager elsewhere.
