The National Leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the Senators who threatened to commence impeachment process against President Muhammadu Buhari following the ongoing criminal prosecution of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his Deputy Ike Ekweremadu over allegation of forgery, as a bunch of jokers.
The party said in a statement on Wednesday by Mai Mala Buni , its National Secretary that the threat issued at a closed door session of the Senate on Tuesday by aggrieved supporters of Senate President Bukola Saraki, was a huge joke taken too far.
Senators who were divided into two camps, went for each other’s jugular at the closed door session on Tuesday, with the loyalists of the Senate President, threatening to commence impeachment proceedings against the president as a retaliation for the refusal to drop the charges.
Even , the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami who was invited for questioning by the Senate over the issue remained adamant and insisted that the case will be concluded in the interest of public interest and justice.
The APC leadership in the statement said the threat was a laughable one, which should not be taken seriously by Nigerians.
The party urged the Senators to rather concentrate on their constitutional duty of law making and stop playing shenanigans.
The party also asked the accused to face the trial and prove their innocence rather than raising accusations that the President and the APC are politically persecuting them.
The statement reads further ;”The Party advises the Senators in question to stop this huge joke and concentrate on their primary constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking and discharging of their legislative mandates to their constituents at the National Assembly.
“The Party reiterates that the Senators in question do not to allow political shenanigans becloud overall national interest.
“The Party will not to join issues on the Senate forgery suit and other court cases concerning some members of the 8th Senate because it will be sub judice. We advice the Senators in question to tow the same line and allow judicial processes run it normal and legitimate course.
“Repeated allegations that the court cases are politically-motivated by the President and the APC are baseless.
“The President Muhammadu Buhari administration strictly respects the principle of the Rule of Law and also adheres to the constitutional provisions of Separation of Power between the three arms of government.
“The APC urges Mr. President and the entire cabinet to remain focused in its effort to deliver on election promises and to steer the nation to its deserved heights”.
