An unpopular decision with many French fans (who took their anger out on Olivier Giroud this week), Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was left out of France’s EURO 2016 squad by Didier Deschamps.
The 28-year-old star is currently being investigated over an alleged sex-tape blackmail case but claims Deschamps decision to omit him was because of his Algerian descent.
Manchester United legend Eric Cantona recently attacked Didier Deschamps for choosing his 23 man squad on their race, following the omission of North African stars Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa.
Karim Benzema decided to refrain from calling the French manager a racist but did claim Deschamps chose to leave out North African players because of politics.
“He has bowed to the pressure of a racist part of France,” Benzema told Marca.
“He has to know that in France the extremist party reached the second round in the last two elections.
“I do not know if this decision was only down to Didier, because I get along with him, with the president (of the French Football Federation, Noel Le Graet) and everyone.”
