Police Teargas Elementary Students In Playground Battle.

Kenyan police blasted elementary students with tear gas on Monday in a standoff over a Nairobi playground. The children, many under the age of 10, were trying to reclaim a portion of their playground, which private developers had walled off, when Kenyan police in full riot gear lobbed canisters of gas into the crowd. It had the desired effect, scattering the terrified children and reducing many of them to tears.
The disputed portion of the playground was walled off over four days in early December. Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has said that he will fight the development in court on the school’s behalf. The police action drew commentary from Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who called it “brutality beyond words and greed beyond description.”
Supporters and prominent Kenyans, including former presidential candidate Martha Karua and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, used the hashtag #OccupyPlayground to register their disgust at the images being shared online.
